During the year 2021, the Madurai City Police provided effective and public
friendly policing, used advance technologies, deployed adequate precautionary
measures, took stringent action against anti-social elements and rowdy elements
and ensured peaceful environment in the city.
During the year 2021, totally 1550 History sheeted rowdy elements were kept
under close watch in all police stations in Madurai City.
Among them, 1204 rowdy elements, who were involved in criminal activities
i.e 45 rowdy elements for selling narcotic drug ganja and 62 rowdies for
possessing deadly weapons, were arrested and remanded. Further, action
under section 110 Cr.Pc was initiated against 792 habitual offenders. Among
them, 569 rowdy elements were bound over by obtaining bonds and 40 rowdy
elements were arrested and remanded to judicial custody when they violated
bond conditions.
As a result of stringent and sustained action against the rowdy elements, no
revenge murder or murder between rowdy elements or communal related
murder took place in Madurai City in the reported 35 murders during the year
- All the murders reported in Madurai City, during the year, were on the
motive of family disputes, petty quarrels in neighborhoods, and other disputes
within known persons. During the year 2019, out of 42 murder cases reported,
5 revenge murders and 4 rowdy murders took place. While, during the year
2020, out of 37 murder cases reported, 3 revenge murders and 2 rowdy
murders took place. Similarly, no murder for gain reported in Madurai City during the year 2021 as
a result of effective and visible policing in the city limits while during 2019 and
2020, two and three murder for gain cases were reported respectively. Out of 733 robbery and theft cases reported during the year resulting in loss
of properties to the tune of Rs.3.5 crores, properties worth of Rs.2 crores –
were recovered by detecting 481 cases swiftly. Further, in 145 Grave crime
cases reported resulting in loss of properties worth Rs.1.6 crores, properties
worth of Rs.90 lakhs were recovered by detecting 117 cases.
179 two-wheelers and 500 mobile phones, which were reported stolen and
missed during the year were detected, seized and handed over to the owners.
During the year 2021, 338 NDPS Act cases were registered against 587
Narcotic Ganja sellers and 1000 Kgs of Ganja worth Rupees One Crore was
seized. Likewise, 543 COTPA Act (Cigarettes and other Tobacco Products
Act) cases were registered against banned Tobacco sellers and 6500 Kgs of
Tobacco products worth Rs. 30 lakhs were seized. Also, 2980 accused were
arrested under Tamil Nadu Prohibition Act for illegal sale and possession of
IMFL and 5,700 liters of liquors worth Rs. 72 lakhs were seized.
In order to prevent the criminal activities, security action under section
107,109 and 110 Cr.PC was initiated against 2465 persons and good behavior
bond was obtained from 2013 persons and their activities were kept under
check. When 146 persons amongst them violated bond conditions, they were
arrested and remanded to judicial custody.
Further, during the year 2021, 81 rowdy elements were detained under
Goondas Act.
In order to ensure smooth movement of traffic and to prevent loss of lives in
road accidents, traffic rules violators were booked under various sections of
Motor Vehicle Act by registering 9,16,639 cases and fined Rs.6,45,29,600/-
against defaulters.
During the year, the City Police deployed advanced tools and made the
policing more effective in the city. E-beat mobile application was deployed to
increase the visible policing on the streets. Face recognition application was
provided to the police personnel to identify the antisocial elements and
rowdies with existing data through mobile phones. Around 100 patrolling
Police personnel were provided with body worn cameras. 16 Arms Patrol with
body worn cameras are moving in the City limits for swift action to watch over
rowdy elements to prevent crimes in trouble prone areas.
Madurai City Police ensured installation of around 11,500 CCTV cameras at
2500 important junctions and public places in the City and the entire city is
placed under effective surveillance round the clock. The Commissioner of
Police, Madurai City appealed to the general public to install more number of
CCTV cameras in their residential area and business establishment as the
cameras provides immense assistance to the City Police in prevention of
crimes and regulation of traffic effectively.
The Commissioner of Police, Madurai City also appealed to the general public
to desist from driving vehicles in drunken condition during the New Year’s eve
and celebrate the day safely.
